Tell me about yourself…
A commonly asked question in most interviews and not necessarily to find out more information but to see how you react on the spot. You are being given full control here to give the right impression, but not to talk about your complete life story. Try not to get carried away and lose sight of why you are there, after all they aren’t trying to become your friend but your employer. We recommend keeping your answer to around 2 minutes. Cover your education, work history and experience. You can also briefly touch on your personal interests, especially if they are in a similar field to the position that you’re going for.
What are your weaknesses?
First things first, this is not a trick question and everyone has weaknesses so being a perfectionist doesn’t count. Being honest will leave a better impression then trying to blag that you’re simply good at everything. The best way to answer this is to think of an example of a weakness, but also give ways of trying to address it. An example would be getting carried away with multiple projects and having to refer back to a list that you have made, so that you ensure all tasks have been finished before starting something new.
Why should you get this job?
This can be a difficult question especially if you don’t overly enjoy talking about yourself and your strengths, but essentially this is a way of asking for a personal sales pitch.
This is the point in the interview when you need to give examples of your work, talk about your strengths and essentially what you can bring to their team and business. To make a good impression it’s always a good idea to talk about what you think they want and how you can provide it. This shows you have been listening to everything they have been saying and that you are entirely interested in the role and their firm, not just needing the money.

- What do I wear? Your choice of clothing can give your employer a whole new insight into your personality so make sure you look the part. If you’re really not sure what to wear then it’s best to go smart – it’s easier for them to tell you to relax your clothing choices than to criticise you for wearing something inappropriate. Get your outfit sorted the night before so you aren’t stressing about it in the morning.
- Food and Drink. This isn’t something that is often considered but what you eat before can often dictate your mood. We would advise that you have a light snack before you go so that your stomach doesn’t rumble. It’s also important to drink plenty of water before-hand (some employers may find it rude if you start gulping a Lucozade during an interview). Try to use the toilet before too!
- If this is your first ever interview or you’re new to the type of job you are going for then it doesn’t hurt to practise with a friend. Whether they’re experienced or inexperienced they can give you some feedback which could be vital for the day.
- Tell me about yourself. ‘Errrrrrrmmm, well I’m errmm’ does that sound like something you would say? Don’t worry, this is one of the most commonly asked questions in an interview but it can be very difficult to answer when under pressure. The night before simply note down 5 interesting things about yourself. Tell them about your personal qualities.
- A positive ending and a smile can go a long way, so just before you leave say something as simple as ‘Thank you for this opportunity, I look forward to hearing from you’.
